History/Origin Named in commemoration of Charlie On, (1941-1994) businessman and pastoralist, who was born in Darwin in October 1941 to Charlie (Snr) and Lily On at their Parap home. Charlie left school as a teenager to work as a mechanic at Parap Garage. Later he shot buffalo for pet meat throughout Humpty Doo, Koolpinyah and Donalds Lagoon. He also carried out prawning and fishing in Shoal Bay to supply the local market and sell at his family store, known to locals as Charlie On?s General Store.

Charlie bought large tracts of land in the Humpty Doo and rural areas in the early 1960?s which are progressively being subdivided. Charlie also purchased Hodgson River Station, selling cattle to both the Katherine and Berrimah abattoirs.

Charlie married Margaret Petherick in 1965 and raised four children. Surviving cyclone Tracy, he stayed and helped rebuild Darwin. After selling Hodgson River Station he moved back to Humpty Doo to establish one of Darwin?s earliest mango orchards. In the early 1980s he purchased Donalds Lagoon Station to run cattle and buffalo.

Charlie died in December 1994 in Darwin and is buried at his property in Humpty Doo.
