| History/Origin | Galloping Jacks is named after Germogen Ilyich Sergeef (aka Galloping Jack) (1900-1979) soldier, boilermaker and peanut farmer, who having arrived in Brisbane in 1926 and not long after moved to Katherine where he helped with the construction of the North Australian Railway. In 1930, on completion of the railway he took up Block 166, on the western side of the Katherine River, downstream of the railway and town, where he grew peanuts until 1948 when low prices and lack of a market forced him out. He continued to lease the block until 1963 when he surrendered the block to live in retirement. He died at Katherine Hospital in January 1979. He used the rapids/ crossing which bears his name to access his property. |
