History/Origin After HMAS Wewak, a LCH (Landing Craft Heavy) of 323 tonnes, commissioned on 10 August 1973, having been built in Maryborough, Queensland and named after the location of the landing of 6 Division units on 11 May 1945.

HMAS Wewak sailed from Brisbane on 2 January 1975 as part of the RAN's operation NAVY HELP DARWIN following Cyclone Tracy's devastation of Darwin on 25 December 1974. On 17 January 1975 HMAS Wewak, Brunei, Tarakan and Stuart, which was towing the severely damaged Attack, left Darwin for Cairns.
