History/Origin Named after Charles James Kirkland (1856 - 1949) and Margaret Kirkland (c1863 - 1929).

Charles was born in NSW in 1856 and his wife Margaret (nee Cromie) was born at sea around 1863. They married at Paddington, NSW in 1888.

Charles began work for the Northern Territory Times & Gazette newspaper (NTT&G) in December 1878 as a printer. Over time he became a partner, then editor and proprietor, until approximately 1915.

Charles also went into pearling for 3 years to clear a debt he had borrowed after loosing half their house in the 1897 cyclone. He also had community interests in the local cricket club.

Margaret was one of the 82 women who registered on the NT 1895 electoral roll.

The couple frequently travelled back and forth to Sydney. They undertook a world trip in 1906-7 and also visited England in 1914.

Margaret died in Sydney in November 1929 and Charles outlived his wife by 20 years and died in Sydney in November 1949.

In 2011, due to the realignment of the Tivendale Road and Wishart Road intersection, Wishart Road was revoked and renamed. The eastern section of Wishart Road was renamed Kirkland Road.
