| History/Origin | Named after Henry and Mary Ann Trewren. Henry went to South Australia in 1884 to take up Home Missionary work with the Methodist/Wesleyan Church. Henry returned to Victoria to marry Mary Ann in March 1890. Henry was then posted to the Wesleyan Church in Palmerston (now Darwin), Northern Territory, in May 1895. He relocated with Mary Ann, their two children and a 'ladies companion'. Mary Ann registered to vote on 3rd June 1895 (one of 82 women on the Electoral Roll at the time). As well as being the Minister of the Wesleyan Church, Henry was active in the Port Darwin Debating Society and local sport, particularly cricket. Mary Ann was heavily involved with the Church and particularly in activities for young people. They had another two children while living in the Territory. They survived a cyclone in 1897 which destroyed the Wesleyan Church. Henry, along with other residents, lobbied the Church congregations in Adelaide to raise money to buy a new pre-fabricated Church (designed especially for the tropical and cyclonic weather). The Church now stands at The Gardens. Henry died in January 1923, aged 62, and Mary Ann died in Adelaide in July 1942, aged 81. |
