| History/Origin | Named after Norman Barrie Morton who was born in Willoughby, New South Wales, in May 1934. After finishing school, he took up employment in the Commonwealth Department of Health, Queensland. In 1954 Barrie (his preferred name) was transferred to Darwin. He married Rae Que Noy, the daughter of Walter and Rosie Que Noy (a well known local Chinese family) in August 1956. They had five children together, all except one, were born in the Darwin Hospital (at Myilly Point). In the early years, Barrie was involved in go-karting and midget car racing and the development of the Darwin Trailer Boat Club. He went on to be the Trailer Boat Club Secretary in 1974 and President in 1978. In 1987 he was honoured with a life membership. Barrie continued his employment with the Department of Health and climbed the ranks to Hospital Secretary. He was in this position at the time of Cyclone Tracy in 1974. Whilst working for the Department of Health, he was involved in the planning and approval process for the establishment of the Royal Darwin Hospital in Tiwi. In 1975 he was promoted to a position in the Department of Education, and in 1979 was compulsorily transferred from the Commonwealth Public Service to the Northern Territory Public Service as an Executive Officer. He retired in 1982 as an Executive Level 4. Barrie and his wife relocated to Tin Can Bay in Queensland in 1985. He lived there until he died in 2004. |
