History/Origin Named after George Redmond who was born in Charters Towers in 1913. His father a mining engineer and his mother a school teacher, George's determination to complete his education led to him undertaking private study and matriculating before attending the University of Queensland and graduating as an Engineer in 1939. In 1962 George relocated to Darwin and undertook the position of Director of Construction for the Northern Territory. He obtained bigger budgets from Treasury and also assisted local construction firms.

Throughout the next 15 years, George would oversee the construction of 8000 houses, more than 30 large schools, 2500 km of new bitumen sealed roads, and major upgrades to the Stuart and Barkly highways, five linear kilometres of new bridges, as well as power stations, hospitals, wharves and subdivisions. When Cyclone Tracy hit Darwin in December 1974, George Redmond led the initial restoration teams in the effort to restore basic amenities. The Darwin Restoration Commission then took on this responsibility six weeks after the cyclone. Even when George retired to Canberra in 1977, he left behind plans for major development projects including the Bagot Road flyover and the Stuart Highway upgrade. He passed away in December 2003.
