| History/Origin | John Frayne was born around 1864 in Bendigo. He arrived in the Northern Territory by 1888, when he lodged plans for the Roper Bar Hotel. Later, he lived at Pine Creek, where he held a slaughtering licence and was actively involved with the Katherine Turf Club, owning several horses in 1892. That same year, when William Scott, manager of Willeroo Station, was speared, John joined Lindsay Crawford, Alfred Giles, and Sayle in the search for the culprits. During the 1890s, he worked for the Durack family and went on to own Kunja Creek and Commanderoo Springs by 1910. John Frayne died of fever at Horse Creek on 31 May 1912, aged 48. Frayne's Knob, located in the Top Springs area, is named in his honour. |
