| History/Origin |
Named after Myrtle Elizabeth Wunsch who was a nurse in 1935. Myrtle served as a Matron at both the Katherine and Darwin hospitals. She married Jim Cousins, a businessman and miner, in July 1941. Myrtle was the Sister in Charge of the Casualty Ward of the Darwin Hospital when the Japanese bombed on 19 February 1942. Myrtle and other nurses were responsible for attending day and night to the hundreds injured. Myrtle spent most of the war years in Brisbane and then returned to Darwin in 1947. Post war, she organised and opened the Maranga Kindergarten. She passed away in Darwin in August 1966. |
