History/Origin | Patsalou Road is named in honour of Anthony Patsalou (1932-1997), who arrived in Darwin in 1951 from Cyprus. Anthony came to Darwin at the invitation of his brother-in-law, Peter Syrimi, to work with him on a poultry farm in Berrimah. In 1952, Anthony purchased the farm from Peter and managed it independently for two years. In 1954, his brother Chris Patsalou joined him to help run the farm. The poultry farm produced fruit, vegetables, and chickens, which were sold locally. Anthony secured contracts with the Defence Force, the hospital, supermarkets, and five hostels and motels. Notably, in 1962, he even catered for all visiting ships and the Royal Yacht. In 1972, the government acquired the poultry farm for development, allowing Anthony a year to wind down operations. He and his wife, Kyriacou (Koulla), then moved to Moil. Later, in 1978, Anthony purchased Coolalinga Farm, where he grew fruit and vegetables until the family sold the property in 2014. Anthony Patsalou was a respected member of the Greek Orthodox and Cypriot communities in the Northern Territory, remembered for his dedication to local agriculture and community life. |
