History/Origin Frederick Vaughan (1893 - 1956)

Frederick Vaughan was born in Sydney, New South Wales, in 1893 and arrived in Darwin as a teenager around 1909.

He was an active sportsman with a strong interest in boxing, participating in numerous matches and gaining recognition for his success in the ring.

Vaughan, commonly known as Fred, was also heavily involved in Australian Rules Football. He coached the Wanderers Football Club to premiership victories in 1917, 1918 and 1919.

Fred married Edith Vaughan (née Pearse), and together they had five children.

From 1929 to 1931, Vaughan was regularly mentioned in the local newspaper in connection with his boxing activities.

Over the years, Vaughan held a number of jobs in Darwin. He initially worked at Vestey?s Meatworks, later became a printer with The Standard, and also worked on the Larrimah to Darwin railway as a train guard and as a government courier. At one time, he sustained burns to his hands in a benzene explosion.

Fred Vaughan passed away in 1956 at the age of 63 and is buried in Gardens Road Cemetery.
