History/Origin Frederick Vaughan (1893 - 1956)

Frederick Vaughan was born in Sydney, NSW in 1893. Frederick came to Darwin as a teenager around 1909. Frederick was an enthusiastic Sportsman who loved boxing, winning many fights. Fred, as he was more commonly known, was also very passionate about Aussie Rules Football, and coached Wanderers to Premiership in 1917, 1918 and 1919. Fred and Edith Vaughan (nee Pearse) had five children. Fred Vaughan frequently appeared in the paper from 1929 through to 1931 with regard to his boxing matches. He had an accident which scorched his hands from a benzene explosion. Frederick had many occupations in Darwin. He worked at Vestey's Meat Works on arrival in Darwin, then as a printer with the Standard, he worked on the Larrimah to Darwin railway as a Train Guard and as a Government courier. Fred Vaughan passed away in 1956 at age 63. He is buried in Gardens Hill cemetery.
