History/Origin Formerly part of the Berrimah Agricultural Research Centre (Berrimah Farm), road names in the area primarily recognise former workers at the Farm or its research activities, particularly cattle breeding.

Shorthorn cattle are a British Bos taurus breed that originated in north-eastern England in the 18th century. The name refers to their relatively short horns, a defining feature of the early breed type. Originally developed as a dual purpose breed for both beef and dairy production, Shorthorns were among the first cattle breeds imported into Australia.

The breed has contributed to the development of several composite and tropical beef breeds, including the Belmont Red and Santa Gertrudis. In the Northern Territory, Shorthorn genetics are used in composite crossbreeding programs aimed at improving beef quality, growth rates, and tropical climate resilience.
