| History/Origin | The road name "Kerr" is named in memory of Phil Kerr who passed away from Cancer on 15/05/2016. Phil was a very well-known businessman, motorsport supporter and disability services advocate. Phil became a Quadriplegic in 1982 from a Speedway Accident at Northline Speedway. Phil didn't see himself as being disabled, the only thing he couldn't do was walk. Phil arrived in Darwin in 1976. Originally from Mildura Victoria. Phil opened his mechanical workshop in 1980. Phil was a champion speedway sidecar racer at Bagot Park Speedway. Phil owned and operated Phil Kerr Service Centre a mechanical workshop in Harriet Place Darwin City.This was one of the largest workshops in Darwin. Following Phil's accident, he continued to work in the office and run the workshop as he could no longer work on the tools. (Phil was now confined to a wheelchair and had lost the use of his hands). Phil was an inspiration to people with his hard work ethic and positive outlook on life. He trained countless apprentices in his mechanical workshop and assisted people with disabilities to gain independence and get mobile again in their motor vehicles. He would install hand controls, wheelchair lifts and various other modifications to vehicles of disabled persons. Phil mentored young apprentices through his workshop and would give people a chance at getting a mechanical trade that may not have been able to get this opportunity. He was a role model and a true inspirational Darwin icon. His positive outlook on life was contagious. |
