| History/Origin | Named after the SS Macumba, a merchant ship sunk in the Arafura Sea off the Arnhem Land coast as a result of a World War II air raid on 6 August 1943. The vessel had been carrying supplies to Darwin and three crew lost their lives as a result of the attack. The exact location of the shipwreck remained a mystery for 74 years until it was discovered by researchers on board a Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) research vessel in 2017. |
