History/Origin Named after the Aboriginal word for the rhizome of a grass or sedge. During Ludwig Leichhardt's journey to Port Essington, he makes mention in his diary on December 2, 1845 of a meeting with 2 Aboriginals who spoke English. They introduced him to a grass or sedge of which the rhizome had a nut-like swelling and which the Aboriginals called Allamurr. Leichhardt records "...it had a sweet tast, was very mealy and nourishing, and the best article of the food of the natives we had yet tasted. They called it "allumurr".. and were extremely fond of it."
