History/Origin Named after Esther Bohning (1879-1952), who with her husband John Bohning ran Helen Springs Station from 1914 to 1943. Esther together with her husband and some of her children drove a mob of cattle to Alice Springs in 1929 to be railed to Adelaide.

These were the first cattle on the newly completed railway. Ester and daughter Elsie travelled to Adelaide with the cattle. They were dubbed "the petticoat drovers".
