History/Origin Named after Catherine Chambers who was the second daughter of James Chambers, a pioneer colonist and pastoralist of South Australia. James Chambers and his brother John were leading financial supporters to the exploratory expeditions of John McDouall Stuart in the early 1860s. Stuart Named the Katherine River from which the town later took its name in 1862 after Catherine (Kate) Chambers.
