After Benjamin Clarke, who was Officer in Charge of a group of Telegraph operators who travelled from Pt. Augusta in 1871 and installed the first instruments and sent the first messages over the Overland Telegraph Line from all stations between Pt. Augusta and Tennant Creek and in due course from Tennant Creek to England. He opened the Alice Springs Telegraph Station on 30th December, 1871, Barrow Creek, January 19th, 1872 and Tennant Creek February 1872. He stayed in Tennant Creek as Telegraph Master replacing Mr. Kraegen who had perished on the way up, and remained there until August 1872 when the line was completed. He served as Postmaster in various South Australian districts until his retirement.
