| History/Origin | Named after Joe Kaczinsky, a Polish miner, who in 1933 became a partner with Bill Bohning and with him pegged and registered the Peko Mine in 1934. A shaft of about 60 feet was sunk but the values were very poor and as there were no batteries in Tennant at that time the ore had to be sent to Peterborough in SA for treatment. As Kaczinsky and Bohning had no money and could not afford to work the mine a half interest was given to Randolph Schmidt to sink a shaft to 100 feet and drive and cross cut another 100 feet. In the meantime Joe Kaczinsky went out to Alroy and Rockhampton Stations putting down bores (water?). Joe Kaczinsky eventually sold his share in Peko to Schmidt (later Central Milling Co) for 2500 pounds. Eventually, Peko Mine was to become the main project in Tennant Creek. At other times Joe Kaczinsky also owned the New Hope and Cat's Whiskers mines . |
