History/Origin Named after the explorer John McKinlay. In 1866, John McKinlay, during his exploration from Escape Cliffs (at the mouth of the Adelaide River) to the East Alligator River mouth, camped at Benham Lagoon, marking a tree on the eastern side of the lagoon.
