History/Origin Named after Cpl. Tom Sawyer who enlisted on 22nd December, 1915. He was 39 years old and his Unit was given as Tunnel Coy. He had been a miner in civilian life. He died of wounds in Belgium on September 25th 1917. His name appears on the War Memorial.
