History/Origin | Named after Harold Snell, who arrived in Darwin in 1912 and worked as a carpenter on Myilly Point houses. Later was a master builder and built Lyons House, the RSL Memorial hall, and most of the main block of the Smith Street shopping centre. In the late 1940's and 1950's, an area at Maranga (Winnellie) was known as "Snell's". Snells Contracting leased the land and a type of village was constructed by the firm comprising partner's homes, employee homes, a small hall used as a kindergarten, single men's quarters, canteen, mess, mechanic shop, joinery shop, saw mill etc. |
