History/Origin The name Auvergne is believed to have been applied by John Arthur Macartney around 1884, following the South Australian Government granting the land to E G Mayne and himself in partnership.

The partnership sold the stock and land rights of Auvernge to Conner and Doherty in 1896.

J A Macartney was a son of an Anglican clergyman of aristocratic lineage, who migrated from Ireland with his family to Port Phillip in 1848.

It is believed that Macartney had a classical education in France.
