| History/Origin | Named after Egerton Lee Batchelor (1865-1911), politician, born 10 April 1865 in Adelaide. Batchelor was a central figure in the South Australian labour movement as early as his twenties and it is not surprising that he was one of the leading foundation members and a driving force in the formation of the United Labour Party in 1891. First elected to the SA House of Assembly in 1893 he served until his resignation in 1901 in order to enter Federal politics. He was immediately elected to the House of Representatives and served there until his death on 8 October 1911. From 1908 until his death he was Minister for External Affairs and 1911 he also took over responsibility for the Northern Territory. Such was his popularity that during his parliamentary career, both state and federal, he was never defeated in an election. He died while climbing Mount Donna Buang near Warburton, Victoria from a heart attack. |
