History/Origin Lake Mackay was approved as a name both in the Northern Territory and in Western Australia by the Minister for the Interior, Canberra, on 13 March 1934. The feature occurs on the border of the State of Western Australia and the Territory and has been accepted by the Surveyors-General in both State and Territory.

Lake Mackay was named after Donald Mackay who had conducted an Aerial Expedition in the area in 1930.

A local Aboriginal of the Kukatja tribe, Tjumbo Tjapanangka, refers to the feature as "Wilkin Karra - the large salt lake on the NT/WA border".
