History/Origin The suburb of Mitchell and nearby Mitchell Creek are named after Surveyor A J Mitchell who was a Senior Survey with Survey General GW Goyder during the surveying of Palmerston and surrounding hinterland in 1869-70. He was involved in the actual surveying of the land where the current Palmerston stands.

Following the surveying around Port Darwin, he is known to have been employed by the Lands Department in NSW prior to emigrating to California, USA, in 1874.

The suburb boundary, as approved on 8 March 2007, is deliniated on CP 5077.
