History/Origin Named after Frances Mary Goyder (nee Smith)(c 1824-1870) whose brother, Edwin Smith a nurseryman, was a friend of George Woodroffe Goyder, Surveyor-General of SA and later to become the 'founder' of Darwin. Frances and George were married on 10/12/1851 in Adelaide and raised 9 children. During the Goyder survey of Darwin & Environs 1868-70, Frances, together with the children and her sister Ellen Priscilla Smith, had gone to visit her family in Bristol, England. Unfortunately, Frances, who had not been well even before she left Adelaide, died on 8\4\1870 just prior to their planned return to Australia. Goyder later married the sister, Ellen.
