History/Origin Named in commemoration of Joan Fejo (1926-2002) who, known as Joanup to her mother, family members and friends, was born beside the then railway line, at the Four Mile (Parap area) to Kitty and Juma Fejo - Juma Fejo being a Larrakia man and Kitty from the Katherine region. Joanup had six brothers Jim (dec), Eddie (dec), Sam (dec), William (dec), Walli and Frank.

During the Second World War, Joanup along with her mother and brothers were evacuated to Clare, South Australia, as it was feared that the Japanese would invade the top end of Australia. Whilst in Clare, Joanup worked for the women's auxiliary services on the land and then later trained as a nurse.

In 1943 Joanup gave birth to her eldest daughter Kathy in Balaklava SA, to her long life partner Ernest QueNoy. Joanup returned to Darwin after the war with her mother and other family members along with other Darwin families that had been evacuated. On her return she settled into normal community life with Ernest and they went on to have five more children: Mary, Alfie, Maurice, Phyllis and Malcolm.

Joanup passed away peacefully on the 9th November 2002 and is survived by her six children and many grand children and great grand children.
