| History/Origin | Named in commemoration of Amelia Earhart (1898-1937) who was born in Aitchison, Kansas, USA, the daughter of a lawyer. Amelia was a keen aviatrix and in 1932 flew a Lockheed Vega from Newfoundland to Ireland, landing at Donegal. This feat brought her into the forefront of aviation notoriety. Five years later, whilst attempting to fly around the world, Amelia was mysteriously lost north of Lae, New Guinea, her las communication being on 3 July 1937; she had taken off from Darwin proposing to get to Howland Island then on to Hawaii when she disappeared. |
