History/Origin This locality is named after the intermittent lake feature on the Northern Territory / Western Australian borbder. Lake Mackay was named by the Federal Minister for Interior in 1934 after Donald Mackay who had conducted an Aerial Expedition in the area in 1930.

Local Aboriginals refer to the feature as "Wilkin Karra?.
