History/Origin After HMAS Brunei, a LCH (Landing Craft Heavy) of 316 tonnes, commissioned on 5 January 1973 and named after the location of an Australian WW2 amphibious landing.

HMAS Brunei and HMAS Tarakan sailed from Brisbane on 26 December 1974 as part of the RAN's operation NAVY HELP DARWIN, following Cyclone Tracy's devastation of Darwin, arriving in Port Darwin on 13 January 1975.

On 17 January HMAS Brunei, Tarakan, Wewak and Stuart, which was towing the severely damaged ship Attack, left Darwin for Cairns.
