History/Origin After HMAS Flinders, a small surveying ship of 740 tons, commissioned on 27 April 1973, having been built at Williamtown Naval Dockyard, Melbourne.

HMAS Flinders, having sailed from Cairns, arrived off Darwin at 5pm on 31 December 1974 with HMAS Brisbane, to assist in Operation NAVY HELP DARWIN after Cyclone Tracy.

HMAS Flinders proceeded to check and survey harbour approaches and, until her departure on 9 January 1975, was employed in inshore survey of landing areas for landing craft ferrying personnel and stores ashore, fixing the position of navigational aids and locating harbour obstructions.

HMAS Flinders returned to Cairns and continued survey work and was decommissioned in October 1998.
