History/Origin Named after Richard Ward. Richard graduated with a law degree in 1938, and shortly afterwards his guardian arranged for him to take up a position with a Darwin law firm. He joined the Australian Army in early 1942. He was given leave to start his own legal practice in 1942. He then moved to Alice Springs and set up legal practice there, and soon became active in moves for political reform. In 1947, Ward stood for and was elected to the first Legislative Council established in the Northern Territory. After a short absence in South Australia, Ward was again elected to the Legislative Council in 1956. He remained active in agitating for the constitutional development of the Northern Territory. In 1974 he was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory, and retained the appointment of his death in 1977. In 1975, he was appointed as an Aboriginal Land Commissioner.
