History/Origin Named after Bernie Kilgariff, who was born in Adelaide in 1929 and arrived in Alice Springs with his family on one of the first Ghan trains from Adelaide. His first job was building runways for the fledgling Connellan Airways. In June 1943, Bernie enlisted in the Australian Army and served overseas. He was appointed as the first Speaker of the new Northern Territory Legislative Assembly in 1974.

He resigned on 16 July 1975 in order to run for one of two newly-created seats in the Australian Senate for the Northern Territory in the 1975 federal election. Bernie, along with Ted Robertson, was elected as one of the Northern Territory's first Senators. He passed away on 10 April 2010 in Alice Springs at the age of 86.
