He graduated in 1994, and was the first articled clerk accepted by the Darwin office of the Australian Government Solicitor. He was admitted as a legal practitioner of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory in 1996, and commenced practice with the firm Noonans. He was involved in a number of high-profile cases involving Aboriginal land rights, and in the Northern Territory Power Generation litigation.

He joined the Darwin Community Legal Service (DCLS) in 2002, initially as a Project Solicitor, and then as Principal Solicitor.
