| History/Origin |
Named after Lillian (Lil) Jane Tindill (nee Hyde) and George Nicholson Tindill. In 1946 Lil met George, who had been evacuated as a civilian during the war earlier that year. George was the Station Master at Katherine Railway Station. Lil married George on 8 November 1947. Lil contributed in many ways during her 20 years as a resident of the growing outback community of Katherine, making life a little easier and a little bit more fun through her involvement with the Country Women's Association, the Tennis Club, the Red Cross, the Xmas Club and her dress shop. George worked for the railway all his working life. He moved to Katherine in 1929 and became Station Master for 35 years between 1931 and 1966. |
