History/Origin Named in commemoration of Albert Edward 'Ted' WOODWARD, AC, OBE, QC.

Edward Woodward was born in Ballarat in 1928 and graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1951 with a Master of Laws. Called to the Bar in 1951, he became a Queen's Counsel in 1965.
He was leading counsel in Australia's first major Aboriginal land rights case in 1968 for the Yirrkala people. This case was 20 years prior to the Mabo land rights decision in the High Court. He was the Aboriginal Land Rights Commissioner from 1973-1974. Many of his recommendations became law in the Aboriginal Land Rights (NT) Act 1976.
In 2001 he became a Companion in the Order of Australia for his voluntary work: "For contributions to Australian public life, particularly in areas of public administration, social justice, cultural diversity, education and advocacy for people with mental illness".
