| History/Origin | Banyan Road is named after Banyan Farm, a pastoral property established in the mid 20th century in what is now Eva Valley. The property was situated on Miles Road, southwest of Batchelor. The area was known as Banyan Farm in the 1950s, when owned by Boyne Litchfield. It was later acquired by the Childs family, who held the property during the 1960s and 1970s and renamed it Eva Valley after Eva Childs, wife of Bill Childs. Following its sale and subdivision, the name Eva Valley was retained for the locality. Banyan refers to the banyan tree, a term widely used in northern Australia for fig (Ficus) species exhibiting aerial roots and a spreading or 'strangler' growth habit. Although the true banyan (Ficus benghalensis) is native to India and not recorded in the Northern Territory, a number of native fig species occur in the Top End and are colloquially referred to as banyans. |
