History/Origin Name after Mr Peter Panquee OAM, born at Daly River on 15 October 1934 to an Aboriginal mother and a Chinese father, he is Marrathiel. Mr Panquee was part of the stolen generation and was placed in Retta Dixon Home in Darwin as a young boy, upon leaving the Home he went on and worked his entire life in wildlife and environmental research with Northern Territory Administration at Berrimah Farm and CSIRO at Kapalga in Kakadu over a 34 year period. His work at Berrimah Farm included research into domestication of wild water buffalo as well as a research on pig and magpie geese. Mr Panquee worked with scientists and guided them using his skills as a skilled bushman and his expert knowledge of country. His work with scientist were instrumental in the creation of Kakadu National Park, and further expanded based on his work.

Mr Panquee was awarded an Order of Australia award in 1982 in recognition to his dedicated contribution to wildlife and environmental research in the Top End of the NT as well as Buffalo domestication and the development of Kakadu National Park. During his time with CSIRO Mr Panquee was instrumental in selecting the site of the now Territory Wildlife Park. Mr Panquee is an Aboriginal man who's mother was Aboriginal and father was Chinese, his language and tribal group is Marrathiel who's traditional country is from the homeland of Woodikupildiya on the other side of the Daly River. Mr Panquee passed away in Darwin on the 31 January 2020 age 85.
