| History/Origin | Named after Alex Gory, who is believed to have been born in 1881 in southern Russia. He was conscripted to fight in the Russo-Japanese war in 1905. He left his home country in 1912 and travelled via Africa and New Guinea where he prospected for gold before settling in Brisbane for 3 years. He then moved north to Cairns and travelled the country as a peanut farmer, railway fettler and tin prospector. In 1953 he returned to Pine Creek, his adopted home town since 1915, and settled into his first home, a tin shed behind the bakery where he tended a vegetable garden and looked after Angora goats. Gory died in February 1989, aged 107 years, a revered and respected pioneer of Pine Creek. |
