| History/Origin |
Named after Abel Janszoon Tasman an experienced Skipper of the Dutch East India Company who in 1642-43 made the first of two voyages, momentous in Australian discovery. Both occurred in Anthony van Diemen's Govenor- Generalship. In a Church Register of Marriage contracts at Amsterdam, dated 27 December 1631, Tasman was described as a seaman aged 28 of Lutjegast in Holland. Two of Tasman's ships were the 'Heemskerck' and the 'Zeehaen' (used in first expedition). During Tasman's second expedition in 1644 he discovered the Gulf of Carpentaria.
