| History/Origin | The Alstonia genus comprises about 40?60 species of trees and shrubs native to tropical and subtropical regions, including Australia. Many Alstonia species are known for their medicinal properties. The Alstonia actinophylla (or Alstonia verticillosa) - also known as milkwood or chessewood - is common in northern Australia. The Alstonia genus was named by botanist Robert Brown (1773-1858) after botanist and physician Charles Alston (1683?1760). Alston was a professor of botany at the University of Edinburgh and curator of the Edinburgh Physic Garden, which later became the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. |
