| History/Origin |
Named after Alexander and Isabella Crerar. Alexander Crerar was born in Scotland around 1863, came to Palmerston in 1897. He built the stone piers for the OT line over the Katherine and Fergusson Rivers in 1899. He later worked in the mining fields sinking shafts before enlisting in 1916 and served in Egypt and France. Whilst in Europe, he married Isabella, a scottish lass. They returned to Australia and he was discharged in 1920. On his return to Darwin, he carted stone and carried out building work. He constructed the Darwin Cenotaph and Ross Smith Memorial. The Crerars moved to Copperfield Creek (Pine Creek) in 1930 and grew peanuts and potatoes at their farm "Golden Acres". They were evacuated to Sydney in 1942 where Alexander died in 1943 and Isabella in 1945. |
