History/Origin Named after the SS Ellengowan of some 30 tons built in Christiania around 1866. The Ellengowan serviced the Missions in New Guinea prior to being bought by the sugar company on the Daly River. Almost immediately upon entering service on the Daly River it was wrecked in the River where it remained for 4 years. It was purchased and raised by CS Copeland who had a contract to carry mail to Gulf ports of Northern Australia, under Captain Macredie.
