| History/Origin | Named after William (Bill) Joseph Heffernan (1884-1969), pastoralist and serviceman, who arrived at Anthony Lagoon in 1907 with 60 head of cattle and applied for a lease over land which he later called Ti-Tree. Bill was one of the first men in the Territory to join up in 1914 and served with the 3rd Light Horse Brigade in Palestine and Syria. In June 1919, Bill was repatriated to Australia suffering shell-shock and malaria, and was successful in reapplying for the Ti-Tree lease. Bill built his first homestead at Tea Tree Well on the Overland Telegraph Line, but in 1930 he moved the homestead 16km west to the banks of the Hanson River, the site of Nturiya. Bill married Frieda Lehmann in 1939 in Alice Springs and continued to live and run Ti-Tree Station until his death in 1969. Frieda died in 1976 with their ashes buried in a cairn at the station. The Heffernans were highly respected by the large number of local Aboriginal people.
