| History/Origin | Schwarz Crescent is named after Pastor Wilhelm Friedrich Schwarz and his wife Anna Wilhelmine Charlotte Dorothea Schwarz (née Schulz), pioneer Lutheran missionaries at Hermannsburg. Together with Pastor A. H. Kempe, Pastor Schwarz travelled from Bethany, South Australia, to establish the Hermannsburg Mission, arriving in 1877 after a 20 month overland journey. Mrs Schwarz and Mrs Kempe arrived in 1878 and were among the first European women to settle in Central Australia. The Schwarz family remained at Hermannsburg until returning to South Australia in 1889 after 12 years of service. The road was originally gazetted as Schwartz in 1957. Following confirmation from Dorothy Kleinig, daughter of Pastor and Mrs Schwarz, and evidence from Hermannsburg Mission records, the spelling was corrected to Schwarz in 1961. |
