History/Origin Named after Charles Spencely, originally from London, England who arrived in SA in 1853 on the Timandraa and eventually settled in Tea Tree Gully, SA. In 1868/69 he went, as a cook, with Goyder's Party to the Northern Territory for the survey of Palmerston (Darwin) and hinterland. Not long after returning to Adelaide following the completion of the survey in September 1869, he returned to Port Darwin with his wife and child aboard the Kohinoor with the Medical Officer James Millner, in order to make a land selection and settle in the Northern Territory.
