Abstract:

Northern Territory Geological Survey (NTGS) geochemical and drilling datasets contain information on open file geochemical data for samples collected by companies and NTGS. Drillhole samples are defined as samples derived from a drilling process where Sample Method may be described as core (diamond drilling), rock chip (Reverse circulation drilling), cuttings (Rotary air blast drilling), and Drill Type may be described as DD (diamond drilling), RC (Reverse circulation), RAB (percussion rotary air blast drilling), AC (air core), auger.

The data is captured by the department via statutory reporting from exploration companies or NTGS projects. Drillhole geochemical data consists of major elemental oxides, trace and rare earth element abundances collected on subsurface rock samples.

Drillhole maximum assays are the highest assay result for each element/analyte obtained over the sampled length of the hole. No depth down-hole is recorded as the assays may come from different samples down-hole.

Data Quality

Lineage:Drilling, sample and assay data are captured from both open-file company exploration reports and NTGS projects. Open-file data is either supplied in digital form or extracted from hard copy formats. Exploration data is captured routinely as digital data is submitted and from legacy hardcopy reports by either manual processes or scanning and digitising, including spatial data capture from maps where necessary.

Legacy data capture is ongoing and usually on a geological terrane basis. More recent exploration reports and data are supplied in digital formats and have been uploaded directly into a database after transcription to a standard loading template. Data is transferred into a SQL Server database via data type templates e.g soil, rock, drillhole etc. Data is validated twice, at the template stage (before entry) and during loading into the database.

Positional Accuracy:Approximately 20-150m metres using 100k topographical maps or 1-10m using GPS.

Attribute Accuracy:Analysis is performed by laboratories to set standards.

Logical Consistency:Data is logically consistent for the purposes of geological interpretation.

Completeness:Data is as complete as possible for each record. Due to the flat file nature of the STRIKE layers the laboratory method information is not included for each assay and the original source of the data should be checked.

Laboratory metadata is now included with full 'raw' (as-reported) geochemical analyses in the Northern Territory Geochemistry Datasets, Digital Information Package 1 (DIP001) https://geoscience.nt.gov.au/gemis/ntgsjspui/handle/1/94622 on a report basis for all rock sample types. Company reports can be searched and downloaded via GEMIS https://geoscience.nt.gov.au/gemis
