Description

Abstract:

A high resolution 1:5,000 scale dataset that details the extent of flooding for a predetermined flooding frequency (usually 1% annual excedance probability), with peak flood height contours, and floodway derived from hydrologic/hydraulic modelling (2D Quasi floodplain model) using topographical mapping (1:5,000 NT Lands Survey Branch) and flood event flow datasets. The mapping dataset is displayed over a topographic/cadastre base and is mainly used for planning purposes to provide a basis for identifying the extent and distribution of flood levels at a predetermined return period for the Katherine area.

Mapping products produced from this dataset :
1:5,000 Katherine River Designated Flood Level 2005 - 1% AEP (1in 100 year) Maps
1:20,000 Katherine Town Area Floodplain Maps - 1% AEP (1 in 100 year), 2% AEP (1 in 50 year) and 5% AEP (1 in 20 year).
1:50,000 Katherine Rural Area Floodplain Maps - 1% AEP (1 in 100 year), 2% AEP (1 in 50 year) and 5% AEP (1 in 20 year).

Data Quality

Lineage:BIBILIOGRAPHY - The data is a product of the Katherine River Flood Model developed by Coffey Water Studies (Report No. 02/2000D) in 2000 and revised in September 2003 by Water Studies Pty Ltd, incorporating major new developments in the Katherine area.

FLOOD LEVEL INFORMATION

This data shows the extent and depth of flooding for various flood frequencies. The flooding is caused by storm events falling over the entire catchment upstream of Vampire Creek and is indicative only.

The actual extent and depth of flooding during a real flood event may differ significantly at some locations.

The flooding is due to flows;
- In the Katherine River at the stated gauge height at the old railway bridge;
- In water-courses other than the Katherine River;
- Which are a combination of flows in the Katherine River and in other water-courses where flows interact.

Positional Accuracy:Horizontal Accuracy: Expected accuracy of well defines detail is within 0.5mm at photoimage scale. (2.5m on map).
Vertical Accuracy: 90% of elevations are correct to within one half the contour interval at source map scale (0.5m on map)

Attribute Accuracy:High - The accuracy of the attribute information is considered high and conforms to guidlines as per 'Best Practice Principles and Guidelines for Floodplain Management in Australia, CSIRO (2000).

Logical Consistency:GIS editing tools were used to rectify all overshoots and undershoots in linework. Dataset consistency has been manually checked and all classified for surfacewater height.

Completeness:Judged complete at this stage - spatial and attribute verification of the dataset has been performed. Final mapping product has been produced.
