Abstract:

Sinkholes are depressions in the landscape related to collapse features in underlying limestone or dolostone rock formations. These rocks are prone to dissolution by slightly acidic rainwater over geological timescales. Cavities form in the rock ranging in scale from microscopic to cave systems. Sinkholes form when the cavities grow to the extent that the rock above collapses.
The reason this dataset was compiled is that sinkholes are a good indicator of underlying limestone or dolostone, which often host important aquifers. The sinkholes provide one method for delineating karstic aquifers which in many cases either outcrop poorly or are covered by younger rocks.

Such assessments should only be carried out by appropriately qualified engineers and would normally involve detailed site investigations.


Data Quality

Lineage:The features described here as sinkholes here mainly comprise wide, circular to oval shaped, flat bottomed, shallow depressions. They range in up to 2km in diameter and never have subterranean openings. Many of these hold water during the wet season and some throughout the year. These have mainly been delineated using Google Earth. Other types of sinkholes identified are depressions up to 100m in diameter which may or may not have subterranean openings at their bases and can have steep sides. These have been mapped by field inspections. Caves have also been included in this dataset and have been mapped by field inspections and also taken from previously identified ones on topographic and geological maps.

Positional Accuracy:Varies from 3 - 10 metres for sites located with GPS to +/- 250 metres for sites located using satellite imagery.
All sinkhole locations defined in this spatial dataset should be field verified for development purposes.

Attribute Accuracy:The accuracy of the sites attribute information is considered low.

Logical Consistency:Some of the attribute categories such as "Type" are preliminary only and may be changed in the future.

Completeness:Continually updated and maintained.
